NHRC Seeks Report on Beating of Woman Over Loan Default in Andhra Pradesh

New Delhi, June 20, 2025:

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, has acted suo motu on media reports of a woman allegedly tied to a tree and beaten in public by a moneylender in Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh. 

The incident occurred on 16th June 2025 at Narayanapuram village of Kuppam mandal after the victim’s husband reportedly defaulted on a loan of ₹80,000.

Taking serious note of the alleged violation of human rights, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Andhra Pradesh, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.

As per reports dated 17th June 2025, the victim’s husband had left the village due to unpaid debts, leaving his wife to care for their three children and repay loans through daily wage work.
