18 Arrested in Karbi Anglong Witch-Hunting Case: Assam IGP

Karbi Anglong, January 2, 2026:

Police have arrested 18 people in connection with a witch-hunting incident in 1 No. Munda village of Belguri under Howraghat Police Station in Karbi Anglong district, Assam.

Assam Police Inspector General of Police (IGP) Akhilesh Kumar Singh visited the crime scene and informed the media about the arrests. He said the case is being investigated in a scientific and thorough manner.

During the visit, Karbi Anglong Superintendent of Police Pushparaj Singh was also present.

The incident took place on the night of December 30, when a couple — Gardi Biruwa (43) and Meera Biruwa (33) — were brutally killed by villagers on suspicion of practising witchcraft.
