Iran, January 2, 2026:
Clashes between protesters and security forces across several cities in Iran have left six people dead, as demonstrations over worsening economic conditions spread nationwide.
Iran’s Fars news agency reported that protesters in the city of Lordegan hurled stones at government buildings, a mosque, and banks, prompting police to respond with tear gas.
The agency said several buildings suffered serious damage and that a number of people were detained.
In the western city of Azna, Fars said rioters took advantage of a demonstration to attack a police station.
Separately, the Tasnim news agency reported that authorities in Tehran arrested 30 people on charges related to public order offences.
Lorestan Province Deputy Governor Said Pourali said that 13 police officers and Basij members were injured by stone-pelting during demonstrations in Kouhdasht.
The protests began in Tehran on Sunday, when shopkeepers went on strike to protest high prices and economic stagnation, and have since spread to other parts of the country.
